We had our first visit to the OB/GYN on Wednesday, June 20th. Because Trish has diabetes, she is classified as a high-risk pregnancy. Therefore, we have been referred to the high-risk specialist team at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City.Being nervous for our first visit, we came up with a list of questions: When will we do ultra-sounds? What should we be doing with Trish's blood sugars? How big is the baby? How often will we be coming to appointments? And similar questions.
To our surprise, they brought us right into a room, and before we knew what was going on, Trish had slimy goo on her tummy and we were seeing our tiny embryo on the monitor. Then, as the nurse was explaining a few things and we were just starting to soak in the fact that we were seeing OUR BABY, we heard the da dum da dum da dum sound of the heartbeat. WOW!! How amazing!! We weren't sure that we would even be getting an ultrasound this early, let alone be able to hear the heartbeat! I guess, because Trish is high-risk, they do things a little earlier and more often than normal.

So I have to say, that hearing that little heartbeat was one of the highlights of my life. If I had to make a list, which I love to do anyway, I would put it right up there with my own birth, opening my mission call, my wedding day, seeing the Red Sox win the World Series, tasting sushi for the first time, and ... ok, maybe I'm getting carried away. But tears formed in my eyes as the significance of the moment began to set in.
The nurse thought that Trish seemed a little nervous because her blood pressure was a little high. She also said that the baby seemed a wee bit bigger than the estimated due date suggested, but otherwise everything seemed in good shape. The baby was just over an inch long, and estimated due date was set for January 21st. The nurse and Dr. Esplin made us feel so comfortable. We are excited and feel confident knowing that we will be well taken care of throughout the next 7 months!
There were so many emotions at that moment, but one of the happiest was to hear above all else that everything looked great! We even got a priceless souvenir of our first visit, two pictures that were all ours..........our baby's first photos! Those ultrasounds, along with the feelings of being so blessed are something that we will treasure forever.
